Aloft Seoul Gangnam Review: River Views, Suite Upgrades and Real Value

I stayed at Aloft Seoul Gangnam three times between early 2022 and spring 2024.

Low rates and Marriott Bonvoy promotions made another qualifying night difficult to resist. The stays nevertheless produced a partial Han River view, a Hollywood-style bed and an Aloft Urban Suite with a balcony.

One of those upgrades arrived when I checked in late and had to leave early the next morning. Good fortune occasionally has poor scheduling.

My rates ranged from roughly the low-KRW-70,000s to the low-KRW-110,000s per night. At those prices, it was an excellent Marriott challenge hotel. Above KRW 200,000, the compact rooms and imperfect location require more thought.

My score is 8.4/10 at the rates I paid and approximately 7.6/10 at a rate around KRW 210,000.

Quick Verdict

Aloft Seoul Gangnam is a practical Marriott option for travellers with plans around Cheongdam, COEX or eastern Gangnam. Its strongest feature is not the lobby, gym or restaurant. It is the possibility of receiving a river-facing room at a reasonable rate.

The standard rooms suit one person better than two guests with large luggage. The surroundings offer little tourist interest, and Cheongdam Station is less convenient than it looks on a map.

Below roughly KRW 150,000, I would consider returning. Above KRW 200,000, I would compare other Gangnam hotels first.

Stay Details

I booked the same basic city-view room each time and received three upgrades: a river-facing room, a Chic Urban Hollywood room and an Aloft Urban Suite with a balcony.

I held at least Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite status throughout these visits and stayed alone each time. Two stays included breakfast as my welcome benefit; for the suite stay, I chose points because I had to leave before breakfast.

Location: Near Cheongdam, but Not Especially Walkable

Aloft Seoul Gangnam stands at 736 Yeongdong-daero, between Cheongdam Station, the Han River and COEX. The hotel’s official local-area page lists COEX, Starfield Library, Bongeunsa and Apgujeong Rodeo nearby, but not all are pleasant walks.

Cheongdam Station has long underground corridors and many exits. Even after reaching the correct exit, I would allow around ten minutes to reach the hotel. I generally used buses.

Yeongdong-daero has many bus routes, so COEX and Bongeunsa are only a few stops away. Walking is possible in the technical sense, but wide roads and hills make it an unnecessary demonstration of commitment.

The nearby Han River is reachable through smaller streets, but the route is not obvious. The closest riverside is more embankment than developed park, so the hotel view is the stronger attraction.

Getting to Aloft Seoul Gangnam from Incheon Airport

The hotel does not operate its own airport shuttle. Marriott lists Incheon International Airport at about 68 kilometres from the property.

Airport Limousine Bus 6006 serves both Incheon Airport terminals and stops at Cheongdam Xi Apartment near the hotel. The published adult fare is KRW 17,000, though schedules should be checked before travel.

AREX followed by subway or taxi is another option, though the transfers and long walk inside Cheongdam Station are inconvenient after a flight. A direct taxi is easiest with several people or luggage.

Lobby and Public Spaces

The ground floor contains reception, casual seating and Aloft’s familiar colourful design. I used it mainly while waiting for someone rather than as a destination.

The hotel lists Marona, Re:fuel and W XYZ Bar & Lounge. Marona serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, while Re:fuel operates 24 hours. I used the restaurant but not the bar.

Rooms: Familiar Aloft Design, Different Upgrades

The standard room followed the familiar Aloft formula: colourful, efficient and compact. It worked well for one guest; with two people, large suitcases would quickly become active participants.

Rooms facing Yeongdong-daero can receive some traffic noise. From a higher floor, it was noticeable but tolerable for me. Light sleepers may judge the same vehicles more severely.

River View: The Hotel’s Strongest Feature

The river-facing upgrade made my 2022 stay memorable. Nearby apartment towers occupied much of the frame, but the Han River still gave the compact room a stronger sense of space.

The view improved after dark. Snow then began falling overnight, covering the roads, trees and riverbank by morning. The hotel had not changed. My opinion of it had.

Hollywood Bed and Aloft Urban Suite

During one 2024 stay, I received a Chic Urban Hollywood room with an exceptionally wide sleeping surface. The bed looked large enough for three people. I conducted the review alone, preserving both space and methodological simplicity.

The strongest upgrade was an Aloft Urban Suite. A privacy wall separated the living and sleeping areas, with enough space for two guests.

Its defining feature was a private balcony. The Han River was barely visible from this particular suite, but the outdoor space mattered more. Unfortunately, I arrived around 10 p.m. and left at 6 a.m. Weekday availability may have helped produce the upgrade; the weekday schedule ensured that I could barely enjoy it.

I slept. This was not optimal use of a suite, but it remained technically valid.

Breakfast: From a Box to a Buffet

During the pandemic in 2022, the restaurant was not serving its normal buffet. Guests receiving breakfast could choose between a Korean meal and a sandwich box.

I chose the sandwich and ate it in the room while looking at the snow-covered river. The hotel temporarily lost its buffet and accidentally gained atmosphere.

By 2024, breakfast had returned to Marona. The buffet covered the expected Korean and Western items; japchae is what I remember most clearly.

That is not a dramatic culinary endorsement. It was a competent breakfast, and at a room rate in the low-KRW-100,000s, competence was enough.

Marriott Bonvoy Benefits and Service

My elite status materially improved the stays. Marriott’s Elite Welcome Gift table lists restaurant breakfast, points or an amenity for eligible Platinum members and above at Aloft.

I booked the same basic city-view category each time and received a different upgrade on every visit. I also received late checkout when needed. During the suite stay, I did not request it because I had already left approximately ten hours earlier than necessary.

Service was consistently professional and uneventful. No interaction became memorable enough to turn into a story. That is generally preferable to acquiring a story at reception.

Fitness, Business Centre and Parking

The business centre and fitness room were on the third floor during my stays. The gym was very small: useful for a short workout, but not a reason to choose the hotel.

Marriott currently lists the gym as open 24 hours. Self-parking for one vehicle per room is complimentary but not guaranteed because space is limited; valet parking is listed at KRW 10,000 per day. I did not drive, so those parking details come from the hotel rather than personal experience.

Who Should Stay Here?

Aloft Seoul Gangnam works best for Marriott members completing a promotion, solo travellers with plans in eastern Gangnam, and visitors seeking a lower-cost alternative near COEX. It also suits travellers willing to gamble gently on a partial river view.

Travellers who want a quieter Yeoksam location, stronger elite benefits, a lounge and a sauna may prefer AC Hotel Seoul Gangnam. Those whose plans centre on Apgujeong, Garosu-gil or Dosan Park may find Four Points Seoul Gangnam more practical.

It is less suitable for first-time Seoul visitors focused on Myeongdong, the palaces and the historic centre, or for travellers who want restaurants, shopping and sightseeing immediately outside the hotel.

Final Verdict

Aloft Seoul Gangnam was easy to like at the prices I paid. The rooms were clean, the beds were comfortable and elite benefits repeatedly improved the bookings. A partial Han River view gave the standard room more character, the Hollywood Bed added unnecessary but enjoyable width, and the balcony suite showed that the hotel could occasionally be more generous than expected.

The weaknesses are clear: the location is poorly suited to walking, the nearby riverfront is not a major attraction, the gym is small and the standard rooms do not justify every current rate.

At my historical prices, Aloft Seoul Gangnam earns 8.4/10. At approximately KRW 210,000, I would reduce that to 7.6/10. I would return below roughly KRW 150,000, particularly during a Marriott promotion.

At a rate in the low-KRW-100,000s, the hotel was an excellent challenge stay. Above KRW 200,000, the Han River is being asked to perform considerably more emotional labour.
