Rooms and Views: Josun Palace Makes the Stronger First Impression

The guest rooms at JW Marriott Seoul and Josun Palace are both comfortable, but they create very different impressions.

JW Marriott Seoul’s rooms are spacious, practical and conventionally luxurious. The design is restrained rather than dramatic, with a layout that feels easy to use throughout a longer stay. Nothing in the room is particularly surprising, but it performs well as a comfortable base in Seoul.

Josun Palace places more emphasis on design. Its guest rooms feel more visually distinctive, with lighter tones, curved forms and decorative details that immediately separate it from a typical business-oriented luxury hotel. The overall atmosphere feels more contemporary and more carefully staged.

Josun Palace also benefits from its position on the upper floors of Centerfield. The sense of elevation is part of the hotel’s identity, and the surrounding Gangnam skyline can make even a standard stay feel more removed from street level.

JW Marriott Seoul can offer excellent views as well, particularly toward the Han River and the surrounding Banpo area. However, the hotel’s appeal is less dependent on spectacle. Its rooms feel more grounded and functional, while Josun Palace is designed to make an immediate visual statement.

That distinction becomes even clearer in the higher room categories. My Josun Palace suite experience felt rare and genuinely special. The additional space allowed the design to work more effectively, making the hotel feel far more convincing as a destination in itself.

This is why I find Josun Palace difficult to evaluate solely through its entry-level rooms. The hotel’s concept makes the most sense when there is enough space for its design and views to become the focus of the stay.

JW Marriott Seoul’s breakfast is perfectly capable, but it did not leave the same impression. For elite guests using the Executive Lounge, breakfast can also be part of a wider package of lounge benefits rather than a standalone destination.

That access can include breakfast, daytime refreshments and evening service, depending on the hotel’s current arrangements and the guest’s status or room package.

The lounge adds a practical layer to the stay. It provides another place to relax, work or have a light meal without leaving the hotel. When room prices at JW Marriott Seoul and Josun Palace are similar, this benefit can significantly improve the value of choosing JW.

Josun Palace has a different proposition. Its breakfast may be excellent, but the wider elite-benefit package felt limited by comparison, and Grand Reception food-and-beverage services are tied to eligible room categories or packages rather than automatically granted to every Marriott Bonvoy elite member. During my stay, there was also confusion between the benefits communicated before arrival and those explained at check-in.

Staff initially maintained that nothing could be done, and the originally promised benefit was restored only after I complained. This was one stay and one personal experience, so it should not be treated as a universal description of the hotel. Still, it affected how welcoming the property felt to me.

Josun Palace has a beautiful swimming pool. Visually, it is more dramatic and fits the hotel’s photogenic character extremely well. The lighting, reflections and high-rise atmosphere make it one of the property’s most striking spaces.

Service and Operations: JW Marriott Seoul Felt Smoother

Luxury service is difficult to assess objectively. Guests interact with different employees under different circumstances, and a single stay does not define an entire hotel.

With that qualification, my experience at Josun Palace felt less welcoming than I expected from a hotel at this level.

At the time of my stay, the property still seemed to carry some of the operational growing pains associated with a relatively new luxury hotel. Room cleanliness fell short of my expectations, and the handling of the elite-benefit discrepancy felt defensive rather than solution-oriented. The general impression was that saying no came more naturally than looking for a way to help.

Josun Palace was impressive to look at, but it did not always feel warm. The simplest summary of my stay would be: Instagrammable, but not particularly welcoming.

Nothing similarly memorable happened at JW Marriott Seoul—and in this context, that is a compliment.

Check-in proceeded smoothly, the stay felt polished, and there were no meaningful service failures. JW Marriott Seoul was less theatrical, but the experience required less effort from the guest. Everything simply worked.

In luxury hospitality, smoothness can be easy to overlook because it does not produce a dramatic story. Yet the absence of friction is often what makes a hotel feel genuinely luxurious.

Location: JW Marriott Seoul Wins by a Wide Margin

Both hotels are located in southern Seoul, but their practical convenience is very different.

JW Marriott Seoul is directly connected to Express Bus Terminal Station, which serves Seoul Subway Lines 3, 7 and 9. This gives guests convenient access to several parts of the city without requiring a taxi for every journey.

The hotel is also connected to Shinsegae Department Store Gangnam, Central City and a large concentration of restaurants, cafés and shops. Shinsegae Gangnam is one of Seoul’s most significant luxury retail destinations, while the wider complex makes it possible to dine, shop and move around the city without spending much time outdoors.

Banpo Hangang Park is also nearby, adding another option for guests who want to walk along the river or experience a different side of Seoul.

Josun Palace occupies the upper floors of Centerfield between Yeoksam and Seolleung. The immediate surroundings are polished and business-oriented, but neither subway station feels particularly convenient on foot compared with JW Marriott Seoul’s direct connection.

There are many restaurants in the wider area, but much of the nearby dining is oriented toward office workers. Centerfield itself provides additional options, and Josun Palace has excellent restaurants inside the hotel, but most travellers will not want to eat every meal on the property.

Shopping and entertainment choices also become broader once you move toward Gangnam Station or elsewhere in southern Seoul.

For business travellers with meetings near Teheran-ro, Josun Palace may be well positioned. For most leisure travellers—and even many business travellers—JW Marriott Seoul is substantially easier.

Price and Value: Similar Rates, Different Returns

On the dates I have checked, standard-room prices at JW Marriott Seoul and Josun Palace have often sat in a similar range, although Josun Palace can occasionally be slightly more expensive.

At approximately KRW 500,000 per night, I would choose JW Marriott Seoul.

That decision becomes even easier with Marriott Bonvoy elite status. Lounge access, smoother operations, excellent transport connections and superior wellness facilities create a more complete package. Even when the room itself is less visually exciting, the overall stay offers more practical value.

Josun Palace presents a more complicated value proposition.

Its breakfast is better, and its design can make the stay feel more special. However, those advantages are not enough for me to choose a standard room when the price is close to JW Marriott Seoul. Even if the standard-room rate dropped below KRW 400,000, I would not automatically consider it a compelling deal.

The reason is not that Josun Palace is a poor hotel. It is that the property’s strongest qualities emerge in its higher room categories. The views, design and sense of occasion become much more convincing in a suite.

If price were not a concern and I were booking a suite specifically for a memorable hotel stay, I might choose Josun Palace. For a normal luxury stay at comparable rates, JW Marriott Seoul provides the stronger return.

It may not be the more visually memorable of the two hotels, and it cannot match Josun Palace’s breakfast. But it offers the experience I value more: better hospitality, easier transportation, a vastly more convenient location, superior wellness facilities and meaningful benefits for Marriott Bonvoy elite members.
