Best Hotels in Gangnam, Seoul: 7 Hotels Compared After Real Stays
Gangnam is often discussed as if it were a single neighbourhood.
It is not.
COEX, Yeoksam, Gangnam Station, Apgujeong, Cheongdam and Banpo may all appear in the same southern Seoul hotel search, but staying in one can feel very different from staying in another. A hotel near Samseong Station is convenient for conventions and shopping. Yeoksam works well for business while remaining close to Gangnam Station. Apgujeong suits restaurants, clinics and boutiques. JW Marriott Seoul, meanwhile, sits inside Banpo’s enormous transport and shopping complex.
Gangnam is wide enough to require planning and congested enough to punish the absence of it. A journey that looks brief on a map can become a prolonged study of brake lights, so subway access often matters more than taxi distance.
The Han River is also a more substantial divide than some international visitors expect. It is much wider than the Thames in central London or the Seine in Paris, and crossing it is not the same as walking over a short city-centre bridge between attractions. Seoul has an excellent public transport network, but repeated north–south journeys still add time to an itinerary.
The Han River is not a decorative line between two sightseeing districts. It is a very large river that expects to be taken seriously.
I have stayed at all seven hotels compared here, in rooms ranging from compact Aloft and Four Points categories to suites at Grand InterContinental Seoul Parnas, JW Marriott Seoul and Josun Palace.
There is no single best Gangnam hotel for every traveller. There is, however, a clear choice for each type of trip.

If I were personally paying for another stay, I would return first to Grand InterContinental Seoul Parnas.
It offers the best balance of room comfort, service, location and lounge quality. It does not depend on one dramatic feature; it simply does most things very well.
Should First-Time Visitors Stay in Gangnam?
Usually not, unless they have a specific reason to be here.
First-time visitors planning to spend most of their trip around Myeongdong, City Hall, Bukchon, Jongno and Seoul’s palaces will generally find a hotel north of the Han River more efficient. Those areas are reachable from Gangnam, but crossing the city repeatedly can take longer than expected.
Gangnam makes sense when the itinerary already belongs here: an exhibition at COEX, work around Teheran-ro, appointments in Apgujeong or Cheongdam, shopping at Shinsegae Gangnam, or a hotel-focused stay built around a lounge, pool or fitness centre.
The weakest reason is simply wanting to say that you stayed in Gangnam. Geography is less impressed by branding than travellers sometimes are.
Where to Stay in Gangnam
COEX and Samseong
This is the easiest part of Gangnam for an international visitor to understand.
COEX combines a convention centre, Starfield Library, shopping, restaurants, Bongeunsa Temple and major office buildings. The two hotels compared here are Grand InterContinental Seoul Parnas and The Westin Seoul Parnas.
Grand InterContinental has the more convenient connection to Samseong Station, Parnas Mall and Hyundai Department Store. The Westin sits closer to the Bongeunsa side of the district and requires slightly more walking through or around the huge COEX complex.
COEX is also one of the simpler Gangnam areas for an airport-bus arrival, which helps travellers carrying large luggage.
Yeoksam, Gangnam Station and Teheran-ro
Yeoksam is a business district, but it is not isolated from the busier side of Gangnam.
Yeoksam Station and Gangnam Station are only one stop apart on Line 2, and walking between them is entirely possible. AC Hotel Seoul Gangnam therefore works both for nearby offices and for travellers who want access to Gangnam Station.
Gangnam Station may not have Myeongdong’s international sightseeing reputation, but for Koreans it is one of Seoul’s busiest commercial, dining and nightlife districts. The surrounding streets are packed with restaurants, cafés, bars, shops, academies and office workers attempting to occupy all of them at once.
There is also an enormous Olive Young, because apparently an ordinary-sized branch would not be sufficient for Gangnam.
Josun Palace occupies the more luxurious end of the broader Teheran-ro corridor, inside the Centerfield complex between Yeoksam and Seolleung. Its location is efficient for business but less persuasive for conventional sightseeing.
Apgujeong, Sinsa and Cheongdam
The two more affordable hotels in this area are not interchangeable.
Four Points Seoul Gangnam is better positioned for Apgujeong Station, Garosu-gil and the western side of Dosan Park. Aloft Seoul Gangnam sits farther east near Cheongdam, the Han River and the route toward COEX.
Four Points has the more useful immediate neighbourhood. Aloft becomes attractive mainly when the rate is low or a river-facing upgrade improves the room.
Banpo and Express Bus Terminal
JW Marriott Seoul is attached to Shinsegae Gangnam, Central City and Express Bus Terminal Station rather than located in Gangnam’s office centre.
Three subway lines meet at the station, and the complex provides extensive shopping, dining and domestic transport connections. Banpo is reasonably convenient from Incheon Airport, although the terminal’s scale can be confusing with luggage.
COEX may offer the simpler airport-bus arrival. Banpo provides the stronger transport network after arrival.
What About Jamsil?
Jamsil is another major destination in southeastern Seoul, particularly for international visitors heading to Lotte World Adventure, Lotte World Mall, Lotte World Tower and Seokchon Lake.
It is sometimes grouped loosely with Gangnam in travel searches, but the two are not the same area.
When those attractions are central to the trip, staying in Jamsil may be more practical than commuting from central Gangnam. Otherwise, it should be treated as a separate hotel district rather than an extension of COEX, Yeoksam or Apgujeong.
The Seven Hotels
Grand InterContinental Seoul Parnas: Best Overall Luxury Hotel
Grand InterContinental Seoul Parnas is my first choice among these seven.
Its greatest strength is balance. The renovated rooms are polished without feeling overly fashionable, the bedding is excellent, and the connection to Samseong Station, Parnas Mall and COEX is difficult to improve.
Service during my stay felt consistently warm. That matters because some large Seoul luxury hotels can feel impressively efficient without ever becoming particularly personal.
Club InterContinental was the decisive feature. Breakfast, afternoon tea and evening cocktails were substantial, while the atmosphere felt calmer than many crowded hotel lounges in Seoul.
The hotel is less compelling as a basic room-only booking because its full character appears with club access. At the right price, I would happily book a Club Junior Suite rather than insist on the rare Club Grand Suite I previously enjoyed.
For travellers wanting a complete luxury stay near COEX, this is the safest recommendation. It may not dominate every category, but very little feels missing.
The Westin Seoul Parnas: Best Renovated Marriott Near COEX
The Westin Seoul Parnas reopened after the former InterContinental Seoul COEX underwent extensive renovation.
It is therefore better described as newly renovated than newly built. Parts of the original structure remain visible, particularly in the room and bathroom layouts, but the finishes, technology and overall experience feel current.
The hotel combines comfortable rooms, dependable Heavenly Beds, an ambitious breakfast, generous lounge food, a proper lap pool and one of the better hotel fitness centres I have used in Seoul.
For Marriott Bonvoy elite members, lounge access and restaurant breakfast can make the overall value particularly strong.
Its main weakness is popularity. During busy periods, the club lounge may require reservations and queue management, which changes the mood of what should be a relaxing benefit.
Assuming demand becomes calmer—or the hotel continues refining its lounge operations—I would readily recommend it. Grand InterContinental remains my first overall COEX choice, but the Westin may be the better fit for committed Marriott members.
JW Marriott Seoul: Established Luxury with Excellent Infrastructure
JW Marriott Seoul is an older luxury hotel, but older should not be confused with irrelevant.
Its position inside the Shinsegae Gangnam and Central City complex is exceptionally useful. Express Bus Terminal Station serves three subway lines, and shopping and restaurants are directly attached.
The rooms remain comfortable, and the beds are excellent. My Griffin Suite was not enormous, but its separate bedroom, marble bathroom and high-floor view made the upgrade meaningful.
The strongest reason to stay is wellness. The fitness centre, indoor running track, pool, sauna and bathing facilities make the hotel feel like a serious health club combined with a luxury property.
The Executive Lounge is useful but carefully managed, with rules governing visits and access. The benefits are generous, though delivered in a controlled manner.
For travellers prioritising transport, shopping and wellness over novelty, JW Marriott Seoul remains one of the most dependable luxury choices south of the river.
Josun Palace: Excellent Hardware, Difficult Value
Josun Palace has some of the strongest physical facilities in Gangnam.
The rooms are elegant, the bathrooms feel expensive, the indoor pool is beautiful, and the fitness centre is excellent. Breakfast at Constans is also among the better luxury-hotel breakfasts I have eaten in Seoul.
The problem is that the overall experience during my stays did not always justify the price.
Benefits were divided heavily by room category, and an upgraded room did not necessarily include the privileges associated with that category. Service was polite, but the benefits structure sometimes felt more administrative than hospitable.
At the rates I paid, the hotel remained defensible. At substantially higher prices, I would struggle to choose it over Grand InterContinental, the Westin or JW Marriott.
Josun Palace makes the most sense for guests who can book the exact room and benefits they want, and who place design, breakfast and wellness above effortless elite recognition.
AC Hotel Seoul Gangnam: Best Marriott Elite Value
AC Hotel Seoul Gangnam is a well-equipped four-star hotel that becomes unusually complete when the right elite benefits are included.
The room was compact, but my massage-chair upgrade added real value. Breakfast at AC Kitchen was excellent, the Premier Lounge provided a calm place to sit and a light evening meal, and the basement sauna was one of the most enjoyable parts of the stay.
For Marriott Platinum, Titanium or Ambassador members, this may be the most rational choice in the comparison. A lower room rate can include enough benefits to compete emotionally with more expensive hotels, even if the room remains firmly four-star.
Its location is also more useful than the label “Yeoksam” may suggest. Gangnam Station is within walking distance, giving guests access to a much livelier restaurant and nightlife district.
For business around Yeoksam and Gangnam Station, AC Hotel is the practical all-rounder.
Four Points Seoul Gangnam: Practical for Apgujeong
Four Points Seoul Gangnam gets the basics right.
The rooms are compact, the beds are comfortable, and breakfast at Evolution is more substantial than the brand might lead some guests to expect. Its position on Dosan-daero works for Apgujeong, Garosu-gil and parts of the Dosan Park area.
The compromises are clear. Traffic noise can be noticeable, the sink sits near the room entrance, and the hotel offers few leisure facilities.
This is not a hotel for a grand occasion. It is a sensible base for someone who specifically needs this side of Gangnam and values breakfast, sleep and Marriott qualifying nights.
Aloft Seoul Gangnam: Good When It Is Cheap
Aloft Seoul Gangnam was easy to like at the low rates I paid.
Elite upgrades gave me a partial Han River view, an unusually wide Hollywood-style bed and, on another stay, an Aloft Urban Suite with a balcony. The rooms were clean and comfortable, and breakfast was competent.
The location is the limitation. Cheongdam Station is less convenient than it appears, the roads are wide, and walking toward COEX can feel unnecessarily committed.
The Han River view is attractive, but the river’s scale also means that being near it does not automatically make the hotel convenient.
At a genuinely low rate, Aloft can be an excellent choice for a Marriott promotion stay. Above roughly KRW 200,000 per night, the river view is being asked to solve too many problems.
Best Hotels by Traveller Type
For a luxury stay near COEX, choose Grand InterContinental Seoul Parnas.
For Marriott Bonvoy benefits and strong wellness facilities near COEX, choose The Westin Seoul Parnas.
For business around Yeoksam and Gangnam Station, especially with Marriott elite status, choose AC Hotel Seoul Gangnam.
For shopping, transport and extensive fitness facilities, choose JW Marriott Seoul.
For design, premium rooms and an excellent breakfast, consider Josun Palace, provided that the price and included benefits are clear.
For Apgujeong and Sinsa, choose Four Points Seoul Gangnam.
For a low-cost Marriott stay near Cheongdam, choose Aloft Seoul Gangnam, but only when the rate is genuinely competitive.
Final Verdict
There is no single best hotel in Gangnam because there is no single Gangnam itinerary.
My overall choice is Grand InterContinental Seoul Parnas. It offers the strongest balance of room comfort, service, location and club-lounge quality.
The Westin Seoul Parnas is the strongest Marriott alternative near COEX. AC Hotel provides the best practical elite value, while JW Marriott remains the most persuasive choice for transport, shopping and serious wellness facilities.
Josun Palace has exceptional hardware but is more difficult to justify at premium rates. Four Points works because of its location, and Aloft works because of its price.
Most importantly, choose the area before choosing the hotel. Gangnam is large, traffic is persistent, and the Han River is wider than many visitors expect. An expensive room does not become convenient merely because its address appears under a famous district name.
