Best Hotels in Myeongdong, Seoul: Which One Is Right for You?

Myeongdong is one of the first neighbourhoods many international visitors encounter when planning a trip to Seoul.

It is bright, crowded and relentlessly convenient: a compact district filled with cosmetics shops, street food, department stores, restaurants and some of the city’s most familiar tourist landmarks. Namdaemun Market, Seoul City Hall, Deoksugung Palace and Namsan are all nearby, while several subway lines make the area a practical base for exploring the rest of the city.

Unsurprisingly, there are also a great many hotels.

The difficult part is choosing one.

Some hotels are genuinely inside the main Myeongdong shopping district. Others use “Myeongdong” in their names while sitting closer to Euljiro, Namdaemun or City Hall. Some are practical places to sleep between sightseeing trips. Others have club lounges, swimming pools, saunas and enough food to make leaving the building feel administratively unnecessary.

I stayed at seven popular hotels in and around Myeongdong over multiple trips to Seoul to find out which ones are actually worth booking.

My stays took place in different years, room categories and pricing conditions, so this is not a perfectly controlled hotel experiment. It is something more useful: an attempt to explain which hotel I would choose for different types of Seoul trip, based on having actually slept, eaten, swum and occasionally become lost inside all seven.

There is no single winner for every visitor.

The Westin Josun and Lotte Hotel Seoul delivered my strongest overall stays, but that does not mean a first-time visitor should automatically pay for either. Someone spending twelve hours a day exploring Seoul may get more value from a convenient room at Aloft or Four Points than from a luxury lounge visited once between shopping trips.

The right hotel depends less on how many facilities it has than on how much time you plan to spend using them.

First, Understand What “Myeongdong” Means

Hotel names in Seoul occasionally treat neighbourhood boundaries as creative suggestions.

The seven hotels in this guide are all reasonably convenient for Myeongdong, but they do not occupy the same area or support the same travel patterns.

Hotels Actually Inside Myeongdong

Aloft Seoul Myeongdong and Le Méridien Seoul Myeongdong are the two hotels in this comparison most clearly located inside the main Myeongdong commercial district.

They are effectively neighbours. Aloft faces a major road and is slightly easier to identify when arriving for the first time. Le Méridien sits one layer farther inside the district, toward the Chinese Embassy.

The practical difference in walking distance is minor. Both place guests close to Myeongdong’s shops, restaurants and street-food areas without requiring a major road crossing every time they return to the hotel.

Le Méridien shares its building with Moxy Seoul Myeongdong, which occupies the lower hotel floors. I have not stayed at that Moxy. Moxy rooms tend to maintain a reassuring commitment to looking like other Moxy rooms, and my curiosity has so far failed to overcome the rate.

On dates I have checked, Moxy Seoul Myeongdong has also cost more than Moxy Seoul Insadong, despite offering the same general brand proposition. Its lobby and restaurant areas appear to share a floor while remaining separated in a way that is probably clear on an architectural plan.

It remains a valid Marriott option for travellers who like the brand, but it is not included in my ranking because I have not stayed there.

Euljiro Rather Than Central Myeongdong

Four Points by Sheraton Josun, Seoul Myeongdong is beside Euljiro 3-ga Station.

Despite the name, its immediate surroundings feel more like Euljiro than the central Myeongdong shopping streets. That is not necessarily a disadvantage.

Euljiro has its own restaurants, bars, cafés, offices and older alleyways. Euljiro 3-ga Station is served by Subway Lines 2 and 3, making the hotel one of the strongest options for travellers who intend to move around Seoul rather than remain inside one district.

Myeongdong is walkable, but guests should not expect to open the front door and immediately encounter its busiest shopping lanes.

City Hall and Euljiro 1-ga

Lotte Hotel Seoul, The Westin Josun Seoul and THE PLAZA Seoul sit around the western and northern edges of the wider Myeongdong area.

Lotte Hotel Seoul is directly connected to Euljiro 1-ga Station on Line 2 and forms part of a vast complex of department-store, duty-free and underground retail spaces.

THE PLAZA has underground access to City Hall Station, served by Lines 1 and 2. It is the most convenient of the seven for Seoul Plaza and Deoksugung Palace.

The Westin Josun sits between Myeongdong and City Hall. It is close to both areas, although surrounding roads and crossings occasionally make short distances feel more procedural than the map suggests.

These three hotels work particularly well for travellers combining Myeongdong with Deoksugung, Gwanghwamun and the historic centre of Seoul.

Still More Namdaemun Than Myeongdong

Courtyard by Marriott Seoul Myeongdong was called Courtyard Seoul Namdaemun when I stayed there.

The old name remains geographically more honest.

Namdaemun Market is its most immediate major attraction, while Myeongdong, City Hall and Seoul Station are all reachable on foot or by a short journey. The hotel currently advertises a complimentary shuttle to Seoul Station, which can make the AREX airport railway more convenient for international travellers.

For visitors who want to explore Namdaemun Market or need a practical connection to Seoul Station, the Courtyard location still has a clear purpose. It simply does not place guests in the middle of the Myeongdong shopping district.

Best Hotel for First-Time Visitors: Aloft Seoul Myeongdong

For a typical first visit to Korea, I would recommend Aloft Seoul Myeongdong—provided the rate is reasonable.

This is not because Aloft offers the most impressive room, service or facilities. It does not have a swimming pool, sauna or executive lounge. Its public spaces are compact, and the rooms are designed for short urban stays rather than extended luxury residence.

Its advantage is simpler: it is easy to use.

Aloft is inside the Myeongdong block, faces a major road and is relatively easy to find. The main shopping streets and many restaurants are only a short walk away. Both Myeongdong Station and Euljiro 1-ga Station are practical depending on the journey.

A first-time visitor to Seoul is likely to spend most of the day outside. There are palaces, markets, museums, cafés, restaurants and neighbourhoods to explore. Paying significantly more for a club lounge makes little sense if happy hour begins while the guest is still crossing the Han River after a full day of sightseeing.

Aloft also has a better breakfast than I originally expected from the brand, and Marriott Bonvoy Platinum members can select breakfast as a welcome benefit. A late checkout can also be useful before an evening flight.

The problem is pricing. I stayed at exceptionally low rates, including corporate prices below KRW 100,000. At those prices, Aloft was an easy success. On recent dates when I have seen rates above KRW 300,000 or even KRW 400,000, location has had to perform considerably more emotional labour.

Aloft is my first-time visitor recommendation because of its location and simplicity—not because every price is automatically justified.

Best Hotel for Families: Le Méridien Seoul Myeongdong

Le Méridien Seoul Myeongdong is my clearest recommendation for families, particularly those with Marriott Bonvoy Platinum status or above.

Its standard Deluxe Room is modern, quiet and comfortably sized by central Myeongdong standards. The hotel is inside the shopping district, so families can return easily between activities rather than turning every hotel visit into another transportation project.

It also has an indoor swimming pool.

The pool is not large and is better suited to casual swimming than serious lap training, but it gives children something to do inside the hotel. In central Myeongdong, having any usable pool already narrows the competition considerably.

The more decisive advantage is that the hotel currently describes its Club Lounge as family-friendly. A family can use the lounge together rather than dividing the evening into adults enjoying elite benefits while someone else performs childcare elsewhere. Exact access rules should still be confirmed for the booked rate and travel dates.

During my stay, the happy hour was substantial enough to replace dinner, with chicken, gratin, beef stew, bread, desserts and several wines. Families may still prefer to eat outside—and Myeongdong provides no shortage of options—but lounge access creates flexibility when everyone is tired.

The hotel is not enormous. The restaurant, lounge, fitness centre and pool all feel compressed into the available space. It also has a 4:00 p.m. official check-in time, and the shared building with Moxy creates a lift arrangement that requires some initial interpretation.

The greater problem is price. Le Méridien is a well-balanced hotel with a modern room, central location, lounge and pool, and it frequently prices itself with full confidence in all four facts.

At the right rate, it is the strongest family choice in this guide. At a very high rate, families should compare larger luxury hotels elsewhere in Seoul.

Best Hotels for a Special Occasion

The two strongest overall experiences in this comparison were The Westin Josun Seoul and Lotte Hotel Seoul.

They represent different versions of traditional Seoul luxury, and I intend to compare them more directly in a separate article. For now, the useful distinction is simple.

The Westin Josun Seoul: Best for an Anniversary

The Westin Josun Seoul would be my first choice for an anniversary or special occasion.

The hotel has a sense of formality and continuity that newer properties cannot instantly reproduce. Staff service has been consistently polished during my visits, and returning guests may receive a degree of recognition that makes the hotel feel more personal.

Its restaurants are also strong enough to support a celebration without relying on lounge access. Aria is one of Seoul’s better-known hotel buffets, while the property includes several other established dining venues.

My Executive Suite was exceptionally spacious and remains the most impressive room I experienced among these seven hotels. The hotel also handled my birthday thoughtfully, with cookies, snacks and a handwritten message rather than enough decorations to create a balloon-management problem.

The wellness facilities add to the sense of a complete hotel stay.

The unavoidable weakness is age. The Westin Josun is carefully maintained, but it is not new. Travellers seeking the latest room design and brightest contemporary finishes may find Le Méridien more immediately attractive.

Age and character are not opposites, but neither are they the same thing.

Lotte Hotel Seoul: Best for the Grand-Hotel Experience

Lotte Hotel Seoul provided my strongest club-lounge experience.

The Executive Tower combined a large Premier Room, a dedicated upper-floor lobby and Le Salon, where the happy hour included substantial food and Taittinger Champagne during my stays.

The Taittinger became the defining memory. There are hotel stays that change one’s understanding of architecture, service or destination. This one improved my understanding of how much Champagne could be considered part of a lounge benefit.

The hotel also offers extensive dining, shopping and wellness facilities inside the wider Lotte complex. It is well suited to travellers who enjoy the scale and convenience of a large luxury hotel.

That scale is also the problem.

Lotte Hotel Seoul can feel busy, and its connected towers, lobbies, retail passages and shared facilities form something close to an indoor district. Everything is available. Finding the correct route to it may require a brief period of professional development.

The Main Tower is also undergoing a major transition, and the current lounge arrangements differ from those during my stays. My historical Le Salon experience should not be treated as a guarantee of the current Executive Tower product; the full review explains the changes in more detail.

Both Lotte Hotel Seoul and The Westin Josun belong near the top of this list. A detailed verdict between them deserves its own comparison rather than a hurried conclusion inside a broader Myeongdong guide.

Best Value Luxury Hotel: THE PLAZA Seoul

At a sufficiently good rate, THE PLAZA Seoul offers the strongest luxury value among these seven hotels.

The hotel can include club-lounge access, breakfast, a swimming pool, fitness facilities and a sauna at prices that sometimes sit below the nearby Westin Josun and Lotte Hotel Seoul.

Its location is also excellent for City Hall, Deoksugung and Gwanghwamun. City Hall Station connects directly to the building, which is especially useful in rain, snow or Seoul’s more ambitious summer humidity.

The view from my Premier Suite was the best of the seven stays. Seoul Plaza filled the foreground, while the view continued toward Gwanghwamun, the presidential district and Bugaksan.

The most unexpected memory came from the sauna. Sitting in the hot bath while looking at the Seoul night skyline felt more luxurious than several features with much larger marketing budgets.

THE PLAZA also has a competent club-lounge happy hour, and its swimming and sauna facilities make it a genuine staycation option.

There are qualifications.

The wellness facilities are in a separate annex, and some guests dislike leaving the main hotel building to reach them. The hotel itself also shows its age, and the rooms have a distinctive design that may not appeal equally to everyone.

More importantly, price is central to my recommendation. If THE PLAZA and The Westin Josun cost the same, I would choose the Westin. THE PLAZA becomes most persuasive when it is meaningfully cheaper while retaining lounge and wellness access.

It is not necessarily the absolute best hotel here. It may be the best transaction.

Best Practical Hotel at a Reasonable Rate: Four Points Seoul Myeongdong

Four Points by Sheraton Josun, Seoul Myeongdong is rarely the most exciting hotel in this guide.

That may be its strongest quality.

The rooms are modern, straightforward and functional. The hotel is very close to Euljiro 3-ga Station, with access to Subway Lines 2 and 3. Its location is useful not only for Myeongdong but also for Euljiro, Jongno, Cheonggyecheon and other parts of central Seoul.

The breakfast at Evolution was noticeably better in 2026 than during my first stay in 2021. It provided enough variety for a proper breakfast and felt appropriate for a hotel operated by Josun Hotels & Resorts.

There is no pool, spa or executive lounge. The public Lounge & Bar is a paid venue, not an elite lounge. Travellers looking for a hotel-based holiday should continue looking.

For people who need a clean room, a comfortable bed, breakfast, a gym and excellent public transportation, Four Points performs its job with very little drama.

If Four Points, Aloft and Courtyard were priced similarly, I would currently choose Four Points. Aloft has the better location for the central Myeongdong shopping streets, but Four Points offers the most stable combination of modern hardware, breakfast and subway access.

It also places guests in Euljiro, which has become a destination in its own right. Being slightly farther from Myeongdong is less serious when the alternative neighbourhood is also worth exploring.

Four Points is not where I would celebrate an anniversary. It is where I would expect the room to work, breakfast to appear and the subway to remain close. Sometimes competence is the amenity.

What Happened to Courtyard Seoul Myeongdong?

My 2020 stay at what was then Courtyard Seoul Namdaemun was excellent.

For less than KRW 200,000, I received a Seoul Tower-view room with a bathtub, breakfast for two and access to an Executive Lounge serving a generous evening meal. During Chuseok, the full moon appeared beside N Seoul Tower.

It was one of those occasions when the hotel, price and timing cooperated so successfully that later reality had little chance of competing.

The current hotel has a new name and a different value proposition.

The Executive Lounge is gone. Rates are much higher, while the guest rooms have not undergone a complete transformation. MoMo Café breakfast remains a strength, and the hotel has introduced useful features such as a Seoul Station shuttle and in-room water purifiers.

Its location is still good for Namdaemun Market, Sungnyemun and central Seoul. The shuttle also helps travellers using the AREX airport railway.

The problem is not that Courtyard has become a bad hotel.

The problem is that the reasons I once recommended it have weakened while the price has moved in the opposite direction.

My lower current recommendation does not revise the quality of my 2020 stay. It reflects a changed product in a changed market. At a low rate, Courtyard may still make sense, particularly for Namdaemun-focused travellers. At a similar price to Four Points or Aloft, I would currently choose Four Points.

Which Hotel Has the Best Breakfast?

Aria at The Westin Josun Seoul served the best breakfast among these seven hotels.

Josun Hotels & Resorts has a strong reputation for food, and Aria demonstrated why. The buffet combined range with consistent execution rather than depending entirely on the number of counters.

During my stay, Marriott Bonvoy Platinum and Titanium members could choose Aria breakfast instead of eating in the executive lounge. That was one of the hotel’s most valuable elite advantages, although future guests should confirm the current benefit at check-in.

Le Méridien’s main restaurant breakfast was varied, while its lounge breakfast offered a quieter alternative. Four Points also improved considerably between my early and recent stays.

Still, Aria was the clearest winner.

A breakfast buffet does not need to alter one’s understanding of breakfast as a concept. It should provide enough good food that returning for another plate feels like judgement rather than research. Aria managed that reliably.

Which Hotel Has the Best Club Lounge?

Lotte Hotel Seoul had the best club-lounge happy hour during my stays, particularly once the quality of the alcohol is included.

Le Salon offered enough substantial food to replace dinner, along with cocktails, desserts and Taittinger Champagne.

Le Méridien Seoul Myeongdong ranked second. Its lounge was smaller and less elaborate, but the hot food was strong enough to turn happy hour into a proper meal.

The Westin Josun and THE PLAZA also offered useful lounge experiences, but I will save a more detailed comparison for separate articles. Lounge policies, eligible room types, children’s access and food service can change, so travellers should always confirm current arrangements before booking.

More importantly, not every visitor needs a lounge.

For a first trip to Seoul, eating every evening inside a hotel can become a highly efficient way to avoid Korean restaurants.

Which Hotel Has the Best Pool and Sauna?

The Westin Josun Seoul and THE PLAZA Seoul offered the strongest overall wellness experiences.

The Westin felt slightly more refined and convenient as part of the complete luxury-hotel experience. THE PLAZA also had a good pool, fitness centre and sauna, but the separate annex creates an additional journey.

Le Méridien’s pool is much smaller but works well for families and casual swimming. Lotte Hotel Seoul has broader wellness facilities, although Executive Tower guests must travel through the large complex to reach facilities in the Main Tower.

A pool should be judged partly by its intended use. Serious swimmers, children and adults wishing to float quietly after shopping are not asking the same question.

Seven Hotels in One Sentence Each

Aloft Seoul Myeongdong: Best for first-time visitors who value a genuine Myeongdong location more than extensive hotel facilities.

Le Méridien Seoul Myeongdong: The best-balanced family option, with a modern standard room, lounge access and an indoor pool.

Four Points Seoul Myeongdong: The most dependable practical hotel when the price is reasonable and subway access matters.

Courtyard Seoul Myeongdong: Best positioned for Namdaemun and useful for Seoul Station, but less compelling than during its Executive Lounge era.

THE PLAZA Seoul: A strong luxury value when discounted, with excellent views and surprisingly memorable wellness facilities.

The Westin Josun Seoul: My preferred special-occasion hotel for service, dining, atmosphere and a complete luxury stay.

Lotte Hotel Seoul: The strongest lounge-focused experience for travellers comfortable with the scale and complexity of a major grand hotel.

Final Verdict: Spend Your Time Where It Matters

The best hotel near Myeongdong depends on what you expect to do after checking in.

For first-time visitors to Korea, I would prioritise location and price. Aloft Seoul Myeongdong places guests inside the district and makes sightseeing easy. Four Points is a strong alternative for travellers who value subway access and also want to explore Euljiro.

Families should look closely at Le Méridien Seoul Myeongdong, especially when lounge access is included. Its combination of a modern room, central location, children-friendly lounge access and indoor pool is difficult to match in this group.

Travellers seeking a special luxury stay should compare The Westin Josun Seoul and Lotte Hotel Seoul. Both were among my strongest experiences, but they achieve luxury differently. That contest deserves more space than I am giving it here.

THE PLAZA is the hotel I would watch for value. When a low rate includes lounge and wellness access, its age becomes much easier to forgive.

Courtyard remains useful for Namdaemun and Seoul Station, but its current pricing and lack of an Executive Lounge make it harder to recommend than it was during my stay.

My central advice is simple.

If this is your first trip to Korea—and your first time in Myeongdong—you probably do not need to pay extra for a club lounge you may barely use. Choose a well-located hotel, save the money and spend your evenings exploring Seoul.

If you already know the city, prefer to spend more time inside the hotel and have the budget to do so, the area offers several excellent full-service options.

At that point, the question is no longer which hotel is objectively best.

It is which version of Seoul you want to enjoy.
