RYSE Hotel Seoul Review: Rooms, Hongdae Location and Marriott Bonvoy
I have stayed at RYSE, Autograph Collection three times.
That is probably the most useful thing I can tell you at the beginning of this review.
RYSE is not the most luxurious Marriott hotel in Seoul. It has no swimming pool, no traditional executive lounge, and its fitness center is unlikely to become the highlight of anyone’s vacation.
And yet I kept coming back.
My stays stretched from 2020 to 2024, mostly in the Editor Room, with later opportunities to try suites including the Producer Suite. I also returned to CHARR in July 2026 to see how the hotel’s food and beverage offering had changed.
Across those visits, the reasons I liked RYSE remained surprisingly consistent: Hongdae, distinctive rooms, comfortable bedding, playful design and generally friendly service.
The main problem now is rather simple.
It keeps getting more expensive.
Quick Verdict: Is RYSE Hotel Seoul Worth It?
Yes — especially if you actually want to stay in Hongdae rather than simply use it as a transport stop.
RYSE is a lifestyle hotel at 130 Yanghwa-ro in Mapo-gu, right in one of Seoul’s busiest nightlife, shopping and café districts. Marriott’s official hotel page positions the property around Hongdae’s creative culture, and that identity is visible throughout the rooms and public spaces rather than being limited to a paragraph in the marketing brochure.
It is particularly easy to recommend to younger international visitors, Marriott Bonvoy members and repeat Seoul travelers who would rather have restaurants, bars, cafés and shops outside the door than spend every evening inside an executive lounge.
The trade-offs are straightforward. There is no pool, no traditional executive lounge, and rooms facing busy Yanghwa-ro can pick up some street noise. The hotel does have a complimentary fitness center, although my own experience of it was more functional than memorable. Marriott currently lists RYSE Fitness as its on-site recreational facility.
At the right price, those limitations do not bother me much.
At a high enough price, I begin to remember every missing swimming pool very clearly.
Best for: Hongdae nightlife and cafés, younger travelers, couples, Marriott Bonvoy members and anyone who values design and neighborhood character.
Less ideal for: travelers looking for resort facilities, a full executive-lounge experience, or the shortest possible walk to the AREX platforms.
Location: Hongdae Is the Real Amenity
The single biggest reason to choose RYSE is Hongdae itself.
The hotel sits on Yanghwa-ro near Hongik University Street, surrounded by restaurants, cafés, shops, bars and nightlife. Marriott lists Hongik University Station as the nearest subway station and Airport Limousine Bus 6002 among the nearby transport options.
But there is an important qualification for airport travelers.
Hongik University Station is large.
Reaching the nearest subway entrance and reaching the AREX Airport Railroad platforms are not quite the same thing. In my experience, the airport-rail section feels substantially farther away, especially when dragging luggage through the station complex.
Naver Map currently puts the walk from the AREX side of Hongik University Station to RYSE at about 657 meters, or roughly 10 minutes. With luggage, I would still allow a little extra time rather than imagining RYSE as an airport-rail hotel sitting directly above the platform.
That does not make the location bad. Quite the opposite.
The point of staying here is that when you leave the hotel, you are already in Hongdae.
I have always liked Mapo, and that inevitably colors my opinion of RYSE.
On my stays I wandered through Hongdae, Seogyo-dong and the surrounding neighborhoods for coffee and food rather than treating the hotel as a self-contained resort.
That is why the lack of an executive lounge bothers me much less here than it would at many other hotels.
An executive lounge in Hongdae almost feels like an invitation to make the wrong decision.
Design: RYSE Does Not Feel Like a Generic Marriott
RYSE belongs to Marriott’s Autograph Collection, and this is one of those properties where the “individual personality” part of that brand actually makes sense.
Concrete, bold colors, contemporary furniture, art and small playful objects appear throughout the hotel.
The hotel also tends to pay attention to small objects that most business hotels would never bother with.
During my 2020 stay, the room came with playful stationery, candy, RYSE-branded items and pandemic-era amenities including face masks.
Those exact amenities should obviously be treated as a 2020 snapshot, not a promise of what will be waiting in the room today. But the instinct behind them — making the room feel deliberately different — remains part of RYSE’s current identity. The hotel still advertises custom bathrobes, artwork and RYSE-specific room amenities.
Editor Room: Still the Room I Associate Most with RYSE
I stayed in an Editor Room more than once, including a room with two double beds.
The category still exists today. RYSE describes the Editor Room as a space built around art, reading material, custom robes and a modern bathroom with a rain shower. Accessible versions are also available.
More importantly, I actually liked living in it.
The design is colorful without becoming impractical, and the beds were consistently comfortable.
That matters because RYSE sits on a major road in a neighborhood that does not exactly observe an early bedtime. Rooms can pick up some traffic or city noise depending on orientation, so very light sleepers may want to request a quieter position.
I nevertheless slept extremely well here.
During my 2022 stay I remember looking out at Hongdae glowing well into the night and then proceeding to sleep through it without difficulty.
The bedding has been one of RYSE’s most consistent strengths across my stays.
Bathroom configuration can vary. During my earlier stays I was particularly pleased when I received a room with a bathtub, since spending an unreasonable amount of time sitting in hot water is apparently one of my criteria for evaluating hotels.
Housekeeping Was the Least Consistent Part of My Earlier Stays
RYSE was not flawless.
On my 2020 stay, I found a hair inside the refrigerator.
Apparently hotel hair has an impressive ability to locate me.
I reported it, was moved to another room of the same category, and both a manager and the housekeeping supervisor came to apologize.
The housekeeping lapse itself was unfortunate.
The service recovery was excellent.
I encountered another cleanliness issue during my 2022 stay, so housekeeping was probably the least consistent part of my older RYSE experiences.
I would not turn that into a claim that RYSE is currently an unclean hotel. These were my individual stays several years ago, and my later experience was better.
More importantly, my impression of the staff and service improved rather than deteriorated over repeated visits.
That is one reason my overall rating remains fairly high.
Producer Suite: My Favorite Stay
My best visit was in 2024, when I received a Producer Suite.
It was also simply the happiest of my three stays.
The weather outside was brutally cold, but that was Seoul’s fault rather than the hotel’s.
The Producer Suite remains a current RYSE category. RYSE describes it as an open loft-style space with original art, custom furniture, a full-size dining table and a terrazzo bathroom with an elevated soaking tub.
That large table is also what makes the room immediately recognizable.
Compared with the Editor Room, the Producer Suite felt substantially more useful when several people were spending time together.
There was space to sit, eat and talk without everyone gradually migrating onto the bed — a fate that awaits many supposedly large hotel rooms.
The bathroom was another major improvement, with much more counter space and both a bathtub and separate shower.
I had previously tried a Director Suite during my 2022 stay and found it less memorable.
For me, the Producer Suite was the point where upgrading genuinely changed how I used the room, rather than merely giving me additional square meters and a more impressive category name.
Marriott elite upgrades are subject to availability, so I would not assume that the suite experience I received will be repeated for every Platinum or Titanium guest. My own stays left me with the impression that RYSE could be relatively generous with upgrades, but three stays are not a statistically meaningful hotel loyalty study.
Marriott Bonvoy Benefits: Useful, but Do Not Assume Free Breakfast
My Marriott status varied between visits, and I was Titanium Elite on only one of the three stays.
RYSE did not have an executive lounge during my visits, and it still does not operate a traditional Marriott executive lounge today.
Historically, the hotel sometimes compensated with property-specific amenities. In 2022, for example, I received several bottles of wine during my stay, including a wine option connected to my elite benefit.
Those were specific experiences from that period, not current guarantees.
Under the current Marriott Bonvoy terms, Platinum Elite members and above at an Autograph Collection hotel in Asia receive a choice of 1,000 points per stay or an F&B amenity per stay. Complimentary restaurant breakfast as the standard welcome-gift option applies to qualifying resort properties, not ordinary urban Autograph Collection hotels such as RYSE.
So I would check the current hotel-specific offer rather than booking RYSE on the assumption that elite status automatically includes breakfast.
CHARR: Better Than I Initially Expected
Food has been one of the more consistent strengths across my RYSE visits.
In 2020, breakfast at CHARR gave me one of the hotel dishes I still remember years later:
kimchi jjigae.
Not an omelet. Not eggs Benedict. Not an elaborate pastry.
Kimchi stew.
It was rich, full of ingredients and genuinely excellent.
In 2022, breakfast operations had changed during the pandemic and I particularly liked the yogurt bowl, even while finding some of the temporary takeaway policies unnecessarily transactional.
By 2024, I tried CHARR for dinner.
The restaurant suited RYSE: casual, unfussy and reasonably priced by hotel standards.
And then the concept changed again.
When I returned in July 2026, CHARR was operating as a buffet. That is now its official format: Marriott describes CHARR as a Korean contemporary fusion buffet combining open-fire cooking, Korean-inspired dishes and Western classics. It currently serves breakfast, lunch and dinner daily.
I paid KRW 69,000 before a 10% discount for the weekend lunch buffet during that July 2026 visit.
The selection was not enormous, and that was fine with me.
There were salads, salmon, cold cuts, bread, chicken, Korean-style dishes, risotto, fruit and desserts, with touches such as omija tea with pine nuts.
The strongest section was the meat: lamb, carved roast pork belly and freshly cooked beef.
You do not get the encyclopedic selection of a KRW 200,000 luxury-hotel buffet.
I am not convinced everyone needs an encyclopedia for lunch.
For the price, I thought CHARR had found a very sensible position.
Blue Bottle and Side Note Club: Current F&B Options
The ground floor has changed since my first stay.
Tartine Bakery was there in 2020. By my 2024 visit, Blue Bottle Coffee had taken over the space, which made waiting for a delayed room considerably easier to monetize.
Blue Bottle remains officially listed at RYSE in 2026, currently operating daily from 07:30 to 21:00.
Side Note Club, the rooftop cocktail bar on the 15th floor, is also currently operating according to Marriott’s latest information, from 17:00 to 02:00 daily. It also appears in RYSE’s active 2026 promotional packages, so despite periods when it was unavailable during my older stays, it should not be described as permanently closed today.
That distinction matters because my first experiences were heavily distorted by pandemic-era closures.
They are interesting hotel history.
They are not a useful guide to Tuesday night in 2026.
Fitness and Facilities: This Is Not Why You Book RYSE
RYSE currently offers a complimentary fitness center with treadmills, bikes, free weights and strength equipment.
I used it during my 2022 stay.
It was fine.
The cardio equipment was good, but the room itself never made me think, “I should rearrange today’s Hongdae plans so I can spend another hour here.”
There is no swimming pool, and there is no conventional executive lounge.
Those are legitimate limitations, particularly as room rates rise.
But I also think evaluating RYSE entirely by counting facilities misses the point.
I do not come here to stay inside the hotel all day.
Is RYSE a Good Hotel for First-Time Visitors to Seoul?
That depends on what kind of Seoul you want.
For travelers focused primarily on palaces, Jongno, Myeongdong and traditional sightseeing, I would still consider central Seoul locations first. My JW Marriott Dongdaemun review is one example of a Marriott stay with much stronger access to the historic center.
But if your itinerary contains Hongdae nightlife, cafés, shopping, live music, Yeonnam-dong or western Seoul, RYSE becomes much more compelling.
It is also particularly easy to recommend to foreign visitors who want a neighborhood that remains active late into the evening.
The main airport-access caveat is worth repeating: Hongik University Station has AREX service, but the platforms are not immediately outside the hotel. Allow extra time for the walk through the large station when traveling with luggage.
RYSE is a Hongdae hotel with airport-rail access.
It is not an airport-rail hotel that happens to be in Hongdae.
There is a difference.
Is RYSE Hotel Seoul Good Value?
This is where my enthusiasm has become more conditional.
I like RYSE more today than I did after my first stay.
The service felt increasingly polished across my visits, I consistently liked the beds and rooms, and CHARR has developed into a genuinely useful F&B option.
But the room rates have also risen.
When RYSE is priced comfortably below Seoul’s stronger full-service luxury hotels, I find it easy to recommend. If value matters more than the Hongdae address, my The Link Seoul review covers another design-led Marriott option in western Seoul with a very different location and price proposition.
When rates start approaching hotels with pools, executive lounges, spas and much larger facility packages, the calculation becomes less obvious.
The hotel has not suddenly become worse.
The competition simply becomes stronger as the number on the booking screen gets larger.
Final Verdict: 8.5/10
RYSE is one of my favorite Marriott hotels in Seoul.
Not because it has everything.
It very obviously does not.
There is no pool. There is no executive lounge. The fitness center is ordinary. Some rooms can pick up noise from the busy surroundings, and my older stays included more than one housekeeping inconsistency.
And yet I stayed three times.
The Editor Room was comfortable and distinctive. The bedding was consistently excellent. The Producer Suite made my 2024 visit the best of the three. CHARR repeatedly gave me something worth remembering, from kimchi jjigae years ago to a good-value buffet in 2026.
Most importantly, RYSE understands where it is.
Hongdae is not merely the address. It is part of the hotel.
That makes the absence of some traditional luxury facilities much easier for me to forgive. I would rather walk outside for dinner, coffee or a drink here than sit in another executive lounge eating three crackers, four olives and optimism.
My main hesitation today is price.
At the right rate, I would happily stay again.
At the wrong rate, even someone who likes RYSE as much as I do has to start looking at the alternatives.
8.5/10.
A hotel does not need to be perfect to become one you keep returning to.
Sometimes it just needs to know exactly what it is.
